Windows Server 2022 Remote Desktop Services 50 Device CALs are designed for organizations that license RDS access by device. The model is especially useful for shared workstations, terminals, kiosks or shift-based environments where several people use the same computers to reach remote desktops or applications.
A Device CAL is assigned to a specific device, allowing different people to use that licensed device. A User CAL follows a named user and is generally more efficient when one person connects from several devices. RDS CALs are additive access licenses. They do not include the Windows Server operating-system license, ordinary Windows Server CALs, client operating systems or the infrastructure needed to publish desktops and applications. The organization must deploy and activate a compatible RD Licensing server and configure the session hosts for Per Device mode.
Windows Server 2022 RDS CALs can be used with Windows Server 2022 or earlier RD Session Hosts under Microsoft’s compatibility rules. They cannot license access to a Windows Server 2025 session host. The CAL pack must also be installed on a compatible RD Licensing server.
